In most major universities one of the three or four basic first-year graduate mathematics courses is algebraic topology. This introductory text is suitable for use in a course on the subject or for self-study, featuring broad coverage and a readable exposition, with many examples and exercises.   Great introduction to algebraic topology. For those who have never taken a course or read a book on topology, I think Hatcher's book is a decent starting point. However, (IMO) you should have a working familiarity with Euclidean Geometry, College Algebra, Logic or Discrete Math, and Set Theory before attempting this book/5(11).

This book was an incredible step forward when it was written (). Lefschetz's Algebraic Topology (Colloquium Pbns. Series, Vol 27) was the main text at the time.

A large number of other good to great books on the subject have appeared since then, so a review for current readers needs to address two separate issues: its suitability as a textbook and its mathematical by: Algebraic Topology.

This book, published inis a beginning graduate-level textbook on algebraic topology from a fairly classical point of view. To find out more or to download it in electronic form, follow this link to the download page.

I have tried very hard to keep the price of the paperback. Intended for use both as a Algebraic topology 1981. book and a reference, this book is an exposition of the fundamental ideas of algebraic topology.

The first third of the book covers the fundamental group, its definition and its application in the study of covering spaces. The focus then turns to homology theory, including cohomology, cup products, cohomology operations, and topological manifolds.3/5(1).

Algebraic topology, a first course, by Marvin J. Greenberg and John R. Harper. Pp $ ISB. N (Benjamin/Cummings) This book is a revision of Greenberg' Lecturess on algebraic topology. As the authors say in their preface, 'the intent in revising was to make those additions of theory, examples, and.

Massey, Algebraic topology: An introduction, Graduate Texts in Mathematics 56 (). Algebraic topology is a branch of mathematics that uses tools from abstract algebra to study topological basic goal is to find algebraic invariants that classify topological spaces up to homeomorphism, though usually most classify up to homotopy equivalence.

Although algebraic topology primarily uses algebra to study topological problems, using topology to solve algebraic. This book was written to be a readable introduction to algebraic topology with rather broad coverage of the subject. The viewpoint is quite classical in spirit, and stays well within the confines of pure algebraic topology.

In a sense, the book could have been written thirty or forty years ago since virtually everything in it is at least that old. Alexandru Dimca obtained his PhD in from the University of Bucharest.

His field of interest is the topology of algebraic varieties, singularities of spaces and maps, Hodge theory and D-modules. Dimca has been a visiting member of the Max Planck Institute in Bonn and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Intended for use both as a text and a reference, this book is an exposition of the fundamental ideas of algebraic topology.

This is an expanded and much improved revision of Greenberg's Lectures on Algebraic Topology (Benjamin ), Harper adding 76 pages to the original, most of which remains intact in this version.

Greenberg's book was most notable for its emphasis on the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms for any homology theory and for the verification of those axioms 5/5(1).

$\begingroup$ Hatcher's book is very well-written with a good combination of motivation, intuitive explanations, and rigorous details. It would be worth a decent price, so it is very generous of Dr. Hatcher to provide the book for free download. But if you want an alternative, Greenberg and Harper's Algebraic Topology covers the theory in a straightforward and comprehensive manner.

To the Teacher. This book is designed to introduce a student to some of the important ideas of algebraic topology by emphasizing the re lations of these ideas with other areas of mathematics.

Rather than choosing one point of view of modem topology (homotopy theory, simplicial complexes, singular theory, axiomatic homology, differ ential topology, etc.), we concentrate our attention on 5/5(1).

Anyway, this book begins with the basic theory of the fundamental group and covering spaces; then defines the higher homotopy groups and proves they are abelian, but doesn't go further into that theory.

The original book by Greenberg heavily emphasized the algebraic aspect of algebraic s: 4.
